AN ANALYSIS OF ENGLISH IDIOMS FOUND INSHORT STORIES IN “REFORM” MAGAZINE

Language is used to interact with others in daily life. Language is also used to create literary works. Literary works as one of arts has purpose for entertainment. There are several forms of literary works such as drama, poetry, novel, song, and short story. Many people like reading short story because it is simple, interesting and does not need a long time to read it. Many people, however, still misunderstand in interpreting a number of words, when joined together and have different meaning from the individual meanings of each word that is called idioms.

Based on the explanation above, this study was aimed at finding out the types of idioms and the meaning of idioms found in short stories in Reform magazine.

For this study, the writer used descriptive research design in order to obtain the data concerning with the research problem. Besides, the objective approach was also used to describe the literary product as a self sufficient object: which was analyzed and judged without necessarily studying the author’s life. In this thesis, the object of the study was the short stories in Reform magazine on the last three editions (no 27, 28, 29) published in 2005.

The result of data analysis showed that the idioms found in short stories in Reform magazine (no 27, 28, 29) published in 2005 were: lexemic idioms, phraseological idioms, idioms with preposition, idiomatic pairs (identical pairs), idioms with key words from special categories (part of body, color, and time), and idioms with comparison (comparison with as...as, and comparison with like). The meanings of idioms are obtained from their contextual meanings.
