Literature is the expression of human personal life in the form of experience, thought, feeling, idea, enthusiasm, conviction in a concrete description that inspire the enchantment by using its imaginative language. Literary works express the events happened in human life such as their problems, struggles, and conflicts of life. Thus, someone who reads the literary work will find out what the author wants to express. Moreover, he or she can get knowledge about the expression of the author’s thoughts, emotions, and aspirations.

“Literature is vital record of what men have seen in life, what they have experience in daily life, what they thought and felt about those aspects of it.” In a sense, studying literature is the same as studying human beings because it is the reflection of the social process of human beings.

There are many kinds of literary works, one of them is novel. “Novel is a picture of a real life and manners and of the time in which it’s written.” It means that novel may contain of human’s road to live with its obstacles based on the setting of time and place in which it is written, because people who live in different period of time and place will face different problems. Through the characters and their problems created by the author, the reader will recognize familiar experience and feeling that might refer to the life they run. It gives many useful messages of human’s life that is complex with many conflicts to be faced. They may learn from it.
